Our first 2021 event was a 3 man draw sort. Tracy Ward, our new VPA president, hosted the day with just over 90 teams making the event a fun, full day. With a mixture of riders and the surprise of a draw, members had an opportunity to catch up with old friends as well as meet new members. Although there was a bit of a chill in the air, everyone bundled up and enjoyed being back in the saddle moving past the challenges of 2020 and looking forward to a more hopeful and fun 2021.

To start the 2021 VPA year, a sorting clinic was held for novice riders covering the official rules, riding positions, as well as how to move and work with the cattle. The clinic was led by Bob Mott, Ronnie Morales, and Diana Stetson with roughly 30 enthusiastic novice riders in attendance. The day started in the classroom with an explanation of the sport and a review of the penning and sorting concepts. The clinic then moved to the cattle pens where each attendee had an opportunity to do some groundwork, learning how to position and approach the cattle for certain outcomes. After a short lunch break, the horses were saddled and everyone moved to the arena for some practical experience. Working in groups of two and with expert guidance, each rider had the opportunity to practice each position: gate, turn back, and cutter. The clinic ended with an official three person team practice run. It was a fantastic day and a great way to get a jump start on the 2021 VPA season.
